Volleyball Falls to Western Conn. State

Reading Time: 2 minutes

On Wednesday, the Wes Volleyball squad took the road looking to keep their season high, three-game win streak alive, facing off against Western Connecticut State University. Despite a tremendous effort from the Wes women, WCSU came out with a close 3-1 victory in a very hotly contested match (25-23, 25-22, 16-25, 25-23).

Looking to build on recent successes that included a three game win streak and their first NESCAC victory of the year against Hamilton, the team came out of the gate ready to play. All of the sets that Wes lost on the day were decided by three points or fewer, while the set that they won was taken by a nine point margin.

In the three sets the Cardinals came up short, while the Colonials used a strong finish to get the victory. Wesleyan trailed 21-20 in the opener only to see Western take four of the final seven points.  The Cardinals held a 22-21 edge in set two but a 4-0 Western run gave the host a 2-0 lead.  Wesleyan ran away for a comfortable triumph in the third set, leading 9-3 early and never letting the margin fall below five points.  The fourth set again found the Colonials pulling away in the clutch, breaking a 20-20 tie for the win.

“It was frustrating that we were competing with them until the end, but let some of the sets slip away” said Laura Yim ’13. “That is definitely something we will look to improve on as the season goes along.”

Statistically, there were a few standouts for Wesleyan. Casey Reed ’12 had an impressive 17 kills on the match. Libero Ruby Hernandez ’11 had 25 digs, and Yim put up 36 assists. Lesley Faulkner ’11 added 14 kills and freshman Kimberley Farris had five blocks.

The Cardinals will look to rebound on Friday against NESCAC foe Bowdoin at home.
