Field Hockey Starts Season 4-0 for First Time Since ‘97

The Wesleyan field hockey team continued its winning streak this past weekend with conquests over Colby College and UMass Dartmouth. The pair of wins gives Wes a 4-0 record for the time since 1997. It is also the first time Wes has hit the 2-0 mark in conference play since the beginning of full-round robin NESCAC play in the 2000 season.

On the road Saturday in Maine, Wesleyan fought hard for a 2-1 victory in overtime against Colby, avenging a 3-2 OT loss to the White Mules last season. Both teams remained scoreless for most of the game, despite Wesleyan’s offense thoroughly outplaying Colby with 34 shot attempts to the Mules’ 15. Colby finally broke through with 3:40 left in regulation play. The Cards remained composed and evened the score with 51 seconds left in the game as Morgan McCauley ’12 scored off a pass from Taryn Murray ’13. The overtime goal came from McCauley as well, 6:51 into overtime play. Murray charged down the right side and found Liz Chabot ’12 in the center. Chabot cast the ball off slightly left to McCauley for the game-winning goal, advancing their NESCAC record to 2-0.

Back home on Sunday for a non-conference game against UMass Dartmouth, Wesleyan didn’t let up, taking an impressive 4-0 lead at one point. Alex Bean ’11 got Wes on the board off of a cross-field pass from Murray. Chabot followed, netting a pair of goals; one at the end of the first half and the other starting off the second to give Wes a 3-0 lead. The Cardinals’ final goal came from freshman Blair Ingraham ’14, who scored her first career goal off of a pass from Amy Blum ’14 who was situated on the end line. UMass Dartmouth came back to score twice before the close of the game, but failed to rally further, giving Wes a 4-2 victory.

Wesleyan travels this Wednesday to Wellesley, Massachusetts for another non-conference game against Wellesley College, looking to continue towards a 5-0 record.
