For the third time in as many games, the women’s lacrosse team had to face an opponent ranked in the top 12 nationally. And for the third time, the Cards played extremely hard against a far stronger side, but fell short of the desired “W.”
As was the case in earlier games against Colby and Trinity, Wesleyan held its own against Babson College on Tuesday afternoon, but the Cardinals were edged out by the 12th-ranked Beavers 11-6. The Cards, with goals from Maggie Lile ’11, Erin McCarthy ’10 and Laurel Sticklor ’09, pulled even with Babson at 3-3 early in the second half. Babson, however, ripped off four unanswered goals to bring the score to 7-3. While Wesleyan responded with three of its own, two more from Lile and one from Clare Smith ’10, the final seven minutes were all Babson, as the Beavers scored four in a row to seal the deal.
Wesleyan had fallen at defending NESCAC champion and third-ranked Colby 17-12 on Saturday. The homestanding Mules held a 7-6 halftime lead and withstood several Wesleyan rallies for the victory. Wesleyan has now lost three straight since an 18-7 home thrashing of Wheaton.
The Cards will look to get back in the win column this weekend against Amherst. Home-field advantage should be beneficial, as the teams will do battle on Smith Field at noon.
