James, I understand being frustrated with projection problems at the Film Series, but I think you’re missing a major portion of the argument. If you were to project a DVD at the Film Series, the experience could be replicated simply by staying home and watching a DVD on your computer or TV. Sure, it would be on a bigger screen in the cinema, but the quality would be the same and the movie would play straight through in both situations.
On the other hand, projecting a film, with stops and all, is something that is impossible to replicate at home for all but the most avid film fans. Add to that the many rare prints that the Film Series manages to get a hold of and you’re actually seeing prints that may be among the only available copies in the entire world. Seeing many of these movies on actual film is a once in a lifetime opportunity for most of us here at Wes.
Simply put, seeing an actual print of a film is just as important to understanding the original intent of a creator as seeing that film straight through, and seeing a print is only possible at the Film Series. I’d suggest that if what is most important to you is seeing a film without interruptions that you simply rent the films you are interested in seeing on the Film Series. I’d only ask that you keep in mind that seeing actual prints of these films is something that is important and impossible to replicate anywhere but in an actual cinema.
