Women’s basketball adds to win streak

The women’s basketball team picked up another win Saturday, extending their streak to four games. The Cards rolled over Mitchell College 78-50 in what was the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

After dropping the opening game of the season to Kenyon College, the Cards have been besting their non-conference opponents, winning by an average margin of 22 despite a 57-55 nailbiter over Worcester Polytechnic Institute. The streak is a good sign while the Cards gear up for NESCAC competition.

“We feel pretty good about the season so far,” said tri-captain Steph Savas ’08. “It was obviously disappointing to open up the season with a loss, but ever since then, we’ve taken what we’ve learned and become a far stronger team than we were on opening day.”

In the game against Mitchell ,the Cards thoroughly dominated, leading by as many as 29 points in the second half. The shooting for the Cards was excellent as the starting five shot at over 56 percent from the field and shot 80 percent from the line.

The Cards’ excellent play allowed Coach Kate Mullen to deepen the rotation. Ali Fourney ’09, who took game-scoring honors with 19 points, played only 27 minutes. The effort was extremely balanced as six players scored nine points or more.

“Right now, our greatest strength is that every member of our team is contributing,” Savas said. “It makes it especially tough on the teams we play as each game is becoming more and more an overall team effort.”

The win against Mitchell had a good affect on the mood of the team.

“Any win is good for team morale,” Savas said. “But ones like the game at Mitchell are especially exciting because everyone on the team has the chance to enter the game, and showcase their individual talents and contribute to the team’s success overall.”

Tuesday night, the Cards will find themselves in what promises to be a good match up against 4-1 United States Coast Guard Academy.

Coast Guard Academy senior Natalie Moyer has been named the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, averaging 20.3 points, 6.0 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 3.3 steals per game, as Coast Guard won two of three games.

Thursday’s game will also prove to be a similarly heated battle as the Cards face Emmanuel College. Emmanuel is 4-2 on the season and averages just over 68 points per game while the Cards average just over 65. The game against Emmanuel will have some special meaning for the Cards.

“We would love be to beat Emmanuel because they beat us two times last year,” Fourney said. “We’re definitely looking for revenge.”
