Sports shorts: Velardo takes first, Cards finish third at Trinity

Captain Dave Velardo ’08 continued his impressive collegiate career with a first-place finish at the Trinity Invitational this weekend. Velardo found himself tied for medalist honors with Pasquale Pio of Nichols after finishing two rounds of play at one under par (71-72) on the par 72 Blackledge and Tallwood Golf Courses. Velardo, however, prevailed with a win in a playoff between the two top finishers.

Wesleyan finished third of three teams, accumulating a two-day total of 638 (+62). Trinity took the victory in their home event with a total of 618 (+42), while Nichols finished just one stroke back at 619 (+43).

Eli Wilson ’09 provided the Cards’ second best finish, carding rounds of 80 and 83 to secure an 11th place finish overall. With two freshmen and one sophomore on their six-man squad, the Cards might have suffered from first-match nerves. Dan De Rienzo ’11 struggled to an 88 in Saturday’s first round, but rebounded impressively with a 77 on Sunday.

The Cards travel up to Middlebury, VT this weekend for the Duke Invitational at the Myhre Golf Course.
