Volleyball prepares for NESCAC Tournament

If you’ve been by the main gym in Freeman this week, you’ve undoubtedly seen the volleyball team hard at work. The young team is coming off a strong regular season and plans to make a powerful showing in the NESCAC tournament this weekend.

After breaking a four-way tie for second place with Amherst, Conn. College, and Tufts last weekend, the Cards head into the NESCAC tournament as the second seed, a big improvement over their eighth seed last year. The Cards have their strong performance in the regular season (18-8, 7-3 NESCAC) to thank for their seeding.

In last year’s playoffs, the Cards fell to host and favorite Colby in three straight games 30-22, 30-21, 30-19. This year the greatly improved positioning has the team optimistic on the impact they can make in the tournament.

“We are definitely at our high for the season, we are playing really well together, and everyone has really stepped it up,” said Ellie Healy ’10. “I think that we realize that this is our chance to really prove what a good team we are.”

The Cardinals, coming off a win against Bowdoin last Friday night, will take on the seventh-seeded Polar Bears once again in their first-round tournament match today at 6 p.m. at Williams. The Cards won the last meeting between the teams in three straight but hard-fought games with the scores 30-21, 30-28, and 30-23. Wesleyan will look to repeat its performance and kick off a strong NESCAC tournament campaign.

“We were in a little slump a few weeks ago, and we have definitely broken out of that slump, and now are on the rise, and feeling really good for this weekend,” said Lisa Drennan ’09. “It really couldn’t have worked out any better for us.”
