The volleyball team defeated Salve Regina in three straight games Tuesday, improving to 15-8 on the season.
The match became an exercise in discipline for the Cards, as they clearly outmatched the visiting team. The Cards figured that Salve Regina’s slow pace of play would challenge them, but they managed to keep up the tempo and energy. The Cards came out of the blocks extremely well, at one point leading the opening game 20-3 before taking it 30-8. The Cards let up a bit after the first game, letting Salve Regina dictate the pace more and committing several errors. Wesleyan took the second game 30-15 and the third 30-25.
“We just lost our focus,” said co-captain Tory Molnar ’07 of the third game.
Despite slipping, the Cards pulled off the three game sweep and feel strong heading into a huge weekend in which they will be hosting five NESCAC teams.
“We’re really excited about this weekend,” said Ellie Healy ’10. “It’s a defining weekend for many teams, and we are lucky enough to be at home.”
Friday and Saturday, Wesleyan will host a round-robin tournament between Bates, Bowdoin, Colby, Trinity, and Connecticut College. Friday night’s game against Bowdoin will have particular impact on NESCAC tournament seeding. With a successful weekend, Wesleyan could potentially earn the tournament’s second, as the team already boasts wins against Amherst, Trinity, and Tufts this season.
“This weekend is going to be a series of great opportunities to take conference matches,” Molnar said. “If we come out with the intensity we bring every day in practice, we’ll have a really successful weekend.”
“We can’t wait to play the Maine schools,” said Emily Dine ’09.
