The field hockey team earned its second NESCAC win on Saturday against Connecticut College to improve to 2-2, but a Sunday loss to Wellesley brought the Cardinals below .500 again.
A goal by Amanda Nickels ’08 on a penalty corner assist from Molly Adams ’07 started the scoring. The goal was followed by a penalty goal by senior co-captain Cortney Tetrault ’07 and an unassisted goal by Adams. The Cardinals out-shot their opponents 13-2 in the second half and locked up the 3-0 win with solid defensive play and a great goalkeeping effort by Caitlin Kelly ’07, who recorded five saves for the shutout.
“[There was a] huge wave of energy from the first goal,” said Sarah Rosenfeld ’07. “That first goal was crucial and such a great feeling after the let down versus Wheaton. We finally just put the ball in the back of the goal.”
Sunday was a different story for the Cardinals, as they traveled to meet Wellesley in a non-conference match. After a scoreless first half, the Cardinals jumped out to a second half lead 11 minutes into the period on a goal by Julia Perciasepe ’07, assisted by Nickels. However, Wellesley had too many offensive chances on the day, out-shooting the Cardinals 15-5 and amassing 17 penalty corners compared to just two for the Cards. Wellesley scored two goals in the final 15 minutes to storm back and defeat the Cardinals by a 2-1 margin.
The field hockey team will face a tough schedule the next two weeks, with all of the games on the road. Today, the Cardinals will travel to Mount Holyoke in a non-conference contest.
“We are going into the rest of our games with the attitude to win,” Rosenfeld said. “We need wins under our belt so that we can extend our play into the postseason.”
