Volleyball wins

The women’s volleyball team kicked off the season with a solid start at the Williams Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 8 and 9.

After opening with a hard fought loss to Brandeis in which the squad fell in three close games, 24-30, 27-30, and 28-30, the team went on to defeat Wheaton and Smith. The Cards believe that the results of their Brandeis matches would have been different on any other day.

“We had a bit of a rough start against Brandeis, but we hung with them whole time and definitely could have beaten them had we brought our best game,” said co-captain Tory Molnar ’07.

The Cards closed out the first day of the invitational with a win against Wheaton, stepping up their level of intensity while playing with energy and consistency. The second day, the Cards dominated Smith in the first game, but because of a power outage, the team was unable to play the much-anticipated match against Williams.

“It was disappointing that the match against Williams was cancelled, but we’ll see them again soon,” Molnar said. “I can’t wait.”

Despite the technical difficulties, the Lady Cards had a very strong start to the season. The team is especially encouraged with the play of the freshmen. Ellie Healy ’10, averaging 11.8 assists per game, has already made her mark early this season and will be counted on to build on her fast start to the season.

“The team really feels like it’s gelling already,” said Emily Dine ’09. “We get along really well, and that will translate to a lot of success down the road.”

The next move for the Cardinals will be the opening NESCAC matches of the year, as they take on Tufts and Amherst on Sept. 15 and 16, respectively, at Amherst.
