In response to a series of break-ins and attempted break-ins that occurred this fall, the University is considering installing a chain link fence behind the Nicolson dorms.
The proposed fence would span from the northwest corner of the Fauver Residence Hall to the retaining wall at the northwest corner of Nicolson 7. It would be placed approximately halfway down the slope between Foss Hill and Vine Street. For maintenance and accessibility purposes, locked gates would be installed at both ends of the fence.
In the past, thieves have entered the Nicolson area by way of the forested section behind the dorms, which is densely wooded and dark. It is hoped that the fence will better secure the vicinity. Lighting enhancements are also planned.
“The fence shouldn’t be visible from rooms on the ground floor,” Director of Physical Plant Cliff Ashton. “It will run along an existing cleared path in the woods.”
If installed, the fence would block a popular shortcut down the hill to the Vine Street parking lot.
“There are some steps [by Mocon], but if there are student concerns they should make this known,” Ashton said.
Ashton encouraged residents of the area to contact their Resident Advisors with any questions or suggestions about the plan. If no major objections are raised, the fence will be installed within the next few weeks with lighting enhancements to follow.
