The Cardinal softball team failed to take flight in Thursday’s home opener against the Albertus Magnus Falcons, dropping the first Middletown game of the regular season 4-3.

The first inning belonged to the Falcons. Using only four hits and four runs, Albertus Magnus jumped to a quick 4-0 lead. Wesleyan didn’t get on the board until the bottom of the second inning with Sue Frost ’05 scoring on a hit by Karla Hargrave ’08. The Cardinals also scored in the fourth and sixth innings and managed to keep the Falcons scoreless for the remainder of the game. Pitcher Molly Gaebe ’07 ended the last four innings by allowing no hits and striking out seven, but the Cards could not bring in enough runs to take the lead, losing the game by one run.

“Overall, I thought we played well against Albertus,” said head coach Jenn Shea. “Our defense and pitching were pretty solid after the first inning as well. The team kept fighting after being down 4-0, which shows the character and drive of this team.”

April’s showers caused Saturday’s game against the Middlebury College Panthers to be rescheduled, so the second home game for the Cardinals will be against Elms College on Thursday.

“Elms will be a good game for us,” Shea said. “We scrimmaged them earlier this season, so we’ve seen them already. They had a good trip to Florida and we’re going to need to play well on all cylinders to win.”
