Cardinal Character: Nora Bowman ’05

Nora Bowman is a member of the Class of 2005 and a captain starting guard for the women’s basketball team. As the team’s leader in minutes played, captain Bowman will lead the Cardinals against Amherst this Saturday in the first round of the NESCAC tournament. By finishing the 2004-2005 campaign 20-3, the Cardinals have home court advantage against the Lady Jeffs.

JF: Describe your senior season in a word.

NB: Memorable

JF: Why?

NB: It’s a great team to say was my last.

JF: When was the last time you missed a must-make free throw?

NB: No jinxing…sorry.

JF: How sorry is Amherst going to be when they have to play you girls three times this season after Saturday?

NB: Extremely…no elaboration necessary.

JF: What was it like to get revenge on Williams, avenging what was then your only loss on the season?

NB: I think it was more about proving to ourselves that we could beat them than proving it to them.

JF: Twenty wins was nice, but what are your real goals for the season?

NB: I’d like to do better than we’ve ever done, which basically means winning the conference tournament and making it to the NCAAs.

JF: What is your favorite Wesleyan basketball memory?

Most likely when Sue Frost [’05], my best friend of many years, made five three-pointers in one half of basketball. I was pumped.

JF: What is your favorite Wesleyan non-basketball memory?

NB: There are too many, but most likely it involved Sue Frost, her punk rocker wig and a large block of cheese.

JF: And, honestly, which one do you like better?

NB: I like them both so much.

JF: If you had to pick any one of your teammates to take a deciding free throw, who would it be?

NB: I would pick BASH, a.k.a. Ashley Mastrangelo [’06].

JF: WNBA in your future?

NB: Not as a player, but maybe in the stands for a game or two. College hoops are more my style.

JF: What do you plan on doing once you hang up your Nikes?

NB: I am thinking about playing professional doubles darts with Sue Frost, but if that falls through who knows where I will end up.

JF: Why are you number 14?

NB: I always liked 13, but it was taken already. I’m not too big on favorite numbers.

JF: What is different about the team now, a 20-win per year powerhouse, and the team you joined four years ago that was coming off its first winning season in six years?

NB: Everyone’s hard work has paid off, from the people who played on those teams with less successful records to the people who play now.

JF: Does your sister have a prayer of following in your footsteps?

NB: Definitely…oh sisters, sisters!

JF: You averaged 35 minutes per game this year. Are you tired? Even a little bit?

NB: Not tired yet, especially not from anything that has to do with basketball.
