According to U.S. News and World Report’s 2005 rankings, the University is now tied with Haverford College for the ninth best liberal arts college in the nation. This is an improvement from last year’s ranking of 11 and places the University back in the prestigious top-ten. Key criteria for judging schools, including Wesleyan’s low acceptance rate of 27 percent and high graduation rate of 91 percent, brought its scores up from last year’s rankings.
The University did not fare as well in a third category, receiving only a 67 percent in proportion of classes under 20 students.
The top three liberal arts colleges, Williams, Amherst and Swarthmore, reflect no change from last year. Also scoring ahead of Wesleyan were Wellesley, Carleton, Pomona, Bowdoin and Davidson.
A separate list, Kaplan-Newsweek’s 2005 “How to Get Into College” Guide, listed Wesleyan as one of America’s 25 hottest schools. The guide voted Wesleyan the “Hottest for Diversity.” More than a third of the students at Wesleyan are students of color and seven percent are international students, according to Newsweek.
