I am writing to challenge the decision that we, first-semester seniors, are excluded from class-sponsored senior social events this semester. It is unfair that because we chose or were somehow compelled to take one semester off, we are not allowed to attend senior cocktails, the senior formal and various senior week events, unless underclass guests are also allowed at that event. It is unfair that we cannot purchase the money-saving half year pass offered to seniors returning from abroad, but, instead, must spend twice as much as other seniors to attend fewer events.
We have been a part of the class of 2004 for four years, with the exception of one semester. Most of our friends are seniors who clearly want us to be at these events with them. We will not attend spring semester cocktails or senior week parties with the class of 2005. Instead, we deserve what everyone else gets—the privilege to attend a full year’s worth of senior events, not as guests but as seniors.
Early last semester, we received an email notifying us that there had been a meeting about this issue between the officers and Dean Brown, but in order to maximize the enjoyment of these events for the “real” seniors, we could not attend. Why does excluding us from these events make them better for everyone else, especially when our friends want us to be there? Why should we have to pay more money to attend these events as guests, when seniors can buy a money-saving pass? Why do we have to wait until our last semester, when most of our friends have graduated and left, to finally become seniors? The only answer that has been provided is that finding venues big enough to fit all of us is difficult. This is an argument that makes little sense considering that there are only thirty-two first semester seniors, and over six hundred seniors who will graduate in May.
We urge you to change your policy, so that we too can party with our ’04 classmates and friends.
