The Wesleyan softball team hosted neighboring team US Coast Guard Academy for a mid-week, out of conference game this past Wednesday, April 27. The Cardinals remained steady on the defensive side for a majority of the game, but failed to generate any offensive activity, ultimately falling 0-3 to the number four ranked team in Division III.

Wesleyan’s softball team shut out the Amherst Lord Jeffs in the first of a three game series last Friday in Middletown. With a 3-0 win under their belt, the Cardinals headed to Amherst only to fall in both games of Saturday’s doubleheader, 11-6 and 4-3.

This past weekend the Cardinal softball team ceded a doubleheader on Saturday, April 2 to the Middlebury Bobcats, losing a close 1-2 battle the first game before falling 0-8 in five innings the following game. The Cards came back out on Sunday to give Middlebury a taste of their own medicine, turning the tables to trounce the Bobcats 8-0 in five innings, snagging the single game victory.

Over spring break, the Cardinal softball team traveled to Clermont, Fla., to compete in a string of 13 games against a variety of competitors. The team, with nine returning letter winners, started the trip off strong with two initial back-to-back wins over Muhlenberg College and Medaille College.

On homecoming weekend the Field Hockey team lost a heartbreaking contest to NESCAC and Little Three rival Amherst College. Losing a closely contested game by a score of 4-3, the Cardinals fell to sixth place in the NESCAC with a conference record of 4-4 and an overall record of 9-4.

The Cardinal field hockey team recovered from last weekend’s tough loss to the Tufts Jumbos by coming out on Saturday to shut out number 17 ranked Trinity College. The win boosted the team’s record to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the NESCAC, placing them at third in the conference behind Bowdoin and Tufts.

The Wesleyan field hockey squad started out the 2010-2011 season on a high note, shutting out Williams College 1-0 on Saturday at home in the Cardinal’s first contest of the year. This marks an important victory for the Cards, as it puts an end to the Wesleyan field hockey’s seven-year loosing streak to the Ephs.

In the 2009 season, Morgan McCauley ’12 led the Wesleyan field hockey team to an above .500 record, and her play helped the team qualify for nesCaC tournament. Although an injury in the 2008-2009 season severely restricted her field time, McCauley remained eager to play.
