Traveling Feasts in a Gourmet’s Pocket

Every Turkish person knows that on a cold winter morning when everyone is rushing to school or work, there is nothing more tempting than stepping into a nearby bakery to buy a freshly made and warm “poğaça” with a cup of black tea. Poğaça are small, oven-baked stuff breads popular in the Balkan area. Quality […]

Well Bread: Pumpkin Edition

November 10, 2013, by Andy Ribner, Food Editor. Leave a Comment

I’ve made the case before that fall is the best season for cooking. The smells, the coziness, and the general happiness that comes with the leaves changing make for a great excuse to bake. I realize that fall is waning, and winter is coming. So I’ve been trying to make the most of this recipe […]

Greeking Out, Tzatziki Style

And so, just like that, Homecoming/Family Weekend has disappeared as quickly as it found us. Cuisinatorically speaking, this means two things. On the positive side, it means the chaos that can only be described as a permanent state of “12:04 p.m. Tuesday Usdan” has slowly ebbed. On the negative side, it means we have to […]

Yogurt Getting too Mainstream for You? Try Shikarni

November 3, 2013, by Ankur Neupane, Contributing Writer. Leave a Comment

How long has it been since you last tasted heaven? Simply angelic in taste, shikarni is a stunning variation of yogurt, flavored with cinnamon and topped with sliced bananas. Essentially, shikarni is just sugared hung yogurt. The term “hung” refers to the treatment of the yogurt: it is dried, simply enough, by “hanging” it in […]

Despite its apparent simplicity, the craft of delicious, unique, artisanal pizza is an admirable achievement. I’m always searching for a pie with personality: a crust neither too thick nor too thin, a touch of charring, a bit of asymmetry, and experimental ingredient combinations are just a few of the qualities that seduce me. Luckily, I had to look no further than Krust Pizza Bar on Main Street to find pizza that would make me swoon.

The Pickle Stand Review

Joining the more than forty restaurants on and around Main Street in Middletown, The Pickle Stand recently opened at 195 Main Street, where Central News stood for nearly 70 years as a tribute to once-popular “old-world” newsstands. The restaurant has a lot of potential with a fun atmosphere and strong, traditional deli menu, but still has room for improvement before its grand opening in November.

Volunteers Rescue Leftovers, Combat Community Hunger

Every day after Usdan, Pi Café, and Summerfields close their doors to ravenous Wesleyanites, two students swoop in and save uneaten sandwiches, pizza, and salads from their otherwise inevitable fate in the bowels of trashcans and landfills. They transport the leftover food out of the realm of meal swipes and points to a world where […]

Aww, That’s So Sweet! Caramel Apples, Without The Saccharine

October 30, 2013, by Jess Zalph, Food Editor. 1 Comment

“I don’t do sweet,” I say adamantly, referring to everything from candy to relationships. Of course, this statement should be clarified: I certainly do hyperbole. Sweet can be fantastic in the proper place and in the proper dosage. I love strawberries, but given the choice I err on the side of slightly underripe. I […]
