One week ago, former Republican Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich described the political outlook of President Barack Obama as “Kenyan anti-colonialism.” The first thing we can deduce about the comment is that it is obviously derogatory. Putting aside for the moment the confusing anti-colonialism bit at the end, Gingrich is clearly saying that Barack Obama has a “Kenyan”—and therefore un-American—outlook, despite being born, raised, and educated in the United States.
As for the anti-colonialism bit, that’s a bit tougher. Gingrich seems to be equating Obama’s beliefs with those of radical movements that took place in African nations once their citizens were released from the oppressive grasp of European powers. The contemporary outlook on colonialism is that it was a cruel, unjust, and fundamentally racist system of imposing governance. If Gingrich thinks “anti-colonialism” is bad, does that mean he thinks colonialism is good? Does that mean that Gingrich—a man who was the third most powerful elected representative in America during the Clinton years—is racist?
Two days later, Gingrich spoke up again, this time calling Obama a “loud tribesman.” Yeah, he’s racist.
I’m talking about good old Newt because he is the latest in a series of bombastic conservative talking heads preaching—unfortunately quite successfully—about something that genuinely terrifies the hell out me: “reactionism.” You may be unfamiliar with this term, but you are probably familiar with the concept. Charismatic figures such as Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin, and, of course, Gingrich have tapped a freaked-out and unstable base of conservative Americans, and have united them under the banner of bringing back “the good old days.” You may know them as the Tea Parties, but this is only one affiliation among many that reactionary, conservative Americans associate with.
I want you to be scared of this too. I think every rational person should be scared of an ideology that abhors progress and seeks to restore the “greatness” of a closed chapter in our history. This reactionsim is especially absurd when you realize that the Golden Age that they seek to emulate stretched exactly from the beginning to the end of the Cold War.
Why do they miss fighting the intrinsically evil Soviet heathens? One answer is that it provided them with a clear, undeniable enemy—hating Muslims is a much more tricky business because, well, the vast majority of Muslims are not evil. A second, even more important answer is that this was the last period in American history in which white Americans had unquestionable economic and political dominance in this country and the world. With the election of a half-black President and the clear statistical inevitability of whites becoming a minority in this country, some white Americans now feel confused and helpless, especially when they are losing their jobs.
Their logic, while certainly wrong, can be easily understood. Reactionaries fear that, after centuries of oppression, ethnic minorities will use their newfound electoral and economic power to “punish” white people, a phenomena referred to as “reverse-racism.” How they can see Barack Obama and other black politicians as vindictive and bloodthirsty remains a mystery to me.
Conservatives also miss the Cold War era because it was seen as a triumph of Christian values over the steadfastly secular Soviet Union. In both the 2000 and 2004 elections, we all saw the power of the mobilized Christian Right as they twice elected George W. Bush into office.
What’s changed? First of all, one in five Americans now think that the President is a Muslim, and those sixty million people are mad about it. If I were a Muslim I would be deeply insulted that it should matter if there were a conspiracy theory that the President were a Muslim, but that’s beside the point. There is an overwhelming and false sentiment that Islam is an inherently “violent” religion, and that, my friends, is a slippery slope.
The fight against Islam’s perceived “assault on Christian America” has manifested in many different arenas. Perhaps the most publicized of these arenas is the debate over the proposed Islamic center near the site of Ground Zero. However, this debate is tame when compared to the Qu’ran burning that happened in Florida, as well as Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin’s highly religious and partisan rally at the Lincoln Memorial to “reclaim the civil rights movement.”
These conservatives are reacting to Islamic radicalism (which they refuse to separate from peaceful Islam) with Christian radicalism. A political movement based on religion is volatile at best, especially when opposition to another religion is at its core. Right now, the angry voices of this movement are getting far more attention than any others, and that’s exactly what is so frightening about this seemingly ludicrous movement.
If you are frightened too, I encourage you not to remain apathetic about political developments in this country. America cannot afford apathetic liberals right now. The Tea Party and other anti-intellectual movements will continue as long as educated, forward-thinking people sit by and dismiss them as an innocuous fad. We need a movement from the left that is loud enough to oppose reactionism and keep this country moving—albeit one inch at a time—in the right direction.

I see the Argus found someone to act like me from the Left, except this person appears to actually mean it. How sad. I could go through the reason this is crap easily, but all I’ll say is that the author needs to learn to read. Gingrich said “Luo Tribesman,” not “loud tribesman.” I wonder what it says about the author’s racial sensitivity that he doesn’t even know the names of actual tribes that fought colonialism.

I’m glad that Mytheos pointed out that error. Gingrich did indeed say Luo Tribesman, and I’m embarrassed that I looked at only a few online articles (which also incorrectly said “loud”). I don’t think that this fundamentally changes my article, however, as the Luo tribe, being the Kenyan tribe to which Obama’s father belonged, really has little to do with Obama’s politics. The quote still insists that Obama is ‘African’ and not ‘American’ — I maintain that it is a racially charged remark. The rest of what Mytheos had to say was fairly unproductive. He seems like a pleasant guy though.

I could respond to Jordan’s post in detail, but I think someone who tars public officials with the tired “racist” ad hominem attack for the nonexistent sin of quoting articles which allege that Obama’s father was a Luo tribesman who believed in anticolonialism (he was), and that Obama was influenced by that father (he was), thus suggesting that he was influenced by ideologies that are not, in fact, American (he was), without even trying to refute the arguments made by those figures, is in no position to talk about what is “unproductive.” I also question how it is productive to dismiss a movement which routinely quotes the Frankfurt School, the writings of Friedrich Hayek, the history of the Civil Rights movement and indeed of the revolutionary war, and which also obsesses over primary sources from the last century that only professional historians would care about otherwise, as “anti-intellectual.” Jordan has clearly not done his homework on the Newt Gingrich, the Tea Party movement or the people associated with it. I suggest a good look at some sources besides Bill Maher, the Huffington Post, the Daily Kos and Paul Krugman. As one professional to another, it will no doubt improve his writing.

Shah Jahan the Mughal (Muslim) emperor at the time confiscated the building and decided to make it into a mausoleum.

Shah Jahan had 5000 women in his harem and even had incestuous relations with his own biological daughters.

Why is “kill all the unbelievers wherever you find them” so hard to understand?
It will take another 15 years or so for the planet to wake up completely and as one to realize that Islam is not a religion at all but a mass murdering cult started by a very disturbed evil murderer and pedophile that has spiraled out of control. The source of this evil is Mecca and this will have to be vaporized and all the mosques on the planet will have to be razed to the ground. All the Korans and all their evil cult literature will have to be burnt and only then will peace come. About 2 billion Muslims will have to be killed. There seems to be absolutely no option to this scenario. Muslim means violent-cult member and violent cults cannot co-exist with the rest of this planet in this day and age. Think about it ..their population is spiraling and our resources are dwindling and these insane cult members are looking forward to Armageddon. We should give it to them. Let their evil day dreams come true. WHEN WILL THIS START ? WHEN THE COURTS START INFORMING THE GENERAL POPULACE ABOUT THIS CULT. RIGHT NOW WE ARE JUST UNVEILING THE CULT’S FACE .. If we minus 2 billion Muslims = 5 billion. 5 billion peaceful people on the planet will be a tight squeeze but it’ll be cool. Let us cull these cult members from this lovely planet for their sakes as their evil book instructs them to be evil and not co-exist with the rest of the planet. Let us send them on their way to their evil Allah. Call it pest control or what you will but it will have to be done. Dark times are coming and come they will. A few years back thinking like this would have been ridiculous but with every passing day we encounter more and more of these made-mad-by-Islam people who refuse to live in the present and refuse to see the madness in their thoughts and actions. Locking them up means feeding them and spending resources that could be used for good and science otherwise. Science is anathema to them and the dirty years of their pedophile and mass murdering leader is the only era to live in ..so be it… Let’s get rid of them. Anyone can start an evil cult but everyone can stop it. if anyone has another option that would make more sense let me know. I’m not an Israeli but if anyone should start this mass cull it should be Israel because when the evil mad man was alive and spewing at them they didn’t knock him off and look what’s happened. It’s never too late to stamp out filthy evil. Never too late. We all, bar none will help the Israelis.. We have to ..for our sakes and for the good of children and this lovely planet. It is said that blood always flows where Muslims go…soon blood will flow where Muslims have gone but it will be Muslim blood that will flow. Non-Muslim good blood will also flow in the fight back by evil but that is expected. We live in interesting times. Get ready boys and girls ..our grand-children will thank us but first we have some sincere work to do even if it repulses us. Such is life. After dark comes light and only after Islam is smashed will come peace for our children’s children. We have to make this happen. And the only way it’s not going to is if we leave any Muslims alive. 2+2=4, so few Muslims =few mosques , therefore more Muslims= more mosques , so no Muslims = no mosques .
So in conclusion : no Muslims= no evil Islam = peace on earth and living in peace with science and joy and laughter.

There are some decent muslims—but they are decent *in spite of* their religion. I imagine many of them in fact feel quite guilty acting like decent human beings, because they must know in many cases it is “un-islamic”.
