The Bears of the United States Coast Guard Academy were simply too much for the women’s basketball team Tuesday night, shooting the lights out at Silloway Gymnasium for a 70-56 victory. The Bears shot nearly 50 percent from the field over the course of the game and nearly 80 percent from the free-throw line. The strong shooting night ended a five-year winning streak that Wesleyan had over Coast Guard.

The women’s basketball team picked up another win Saturday, extending their streak to four games. The Cards rolled over Mitchell College 78-50 in what was the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

On Tuesday night Fraggle looked ready. The stuffed cardinal sitting on the end of the bench sported a partial ’fro with a fountain-top hairdo and some classy bling. Fraggle has emerged as a good luck charm for the women’s basketball team who never travels without him. Every year a sophomore is picked to be his caretaker and dress him up for both home and away games.

The women’s basketball squad aims to put together its eighth consecutive winning season following a strong 2006-07 season in which the women’s basketball squad went 15-9. Over the past seven seasons the Cards have gone 124-49 for a winning percentage of .717, including six straight trips to the NESCAC tournament and two NCAA tournament at-large bids.

The final pitch was thrown, the final out was counted, and just like that the season was over. The Cards ended on a low note, dropping two straight blowouts to Trinity College, a 7-1 loss followed by a 15-6 loss, leaving them with a 12-23 overall record (3-9 NESCAC West).

Baseball splits mid-week match-ups

The baseball team split their two games this week, moving their record to 12-21 overall. On Tuesday, the Cards dropped their final home game of the season to Westfield State 12-7. The Cards then traveled to Elms College on Wednesday, where they unleashed an offensive onslaught on the Blazers, coming away with a 14-4 victory.

The baseball team’s frustrations continued this weekend, as it dropped all three games of a three-game series against Little Three rival Williams College.

On Wednesday, April 25, the baseball team fell to Eastern Connecticut State University, which is ranked 11th nationally and second in New England. The Warriors, a perennial New England power, have been Division III National Champions twice in the last 10 years.

The Cards continued their less-than-stellar baseball season this weekend, losing two of three games to drop to 11-16 (3-6 NESCAC). Wesleyan traveled to Bowdoin on Saturday expecting a tough matchup against a solid Polar Bear squad. In the opening game of the doubleheader, Bowdoin sealed a victory in the fifth inning, when a grand slam gave the Polar Bears a 6-2 lead.

This past weekend the Cards met the Hamilton Continentals in what turned out to be a very one-sided three-game series, although the Cards took their collective foot off the gas at the last second and failed to deliver what should have been a three-game sweep. The Cards were untouchable for the first 24 innings of the weekend, winning the first two games with scores of 8-1 and 4-1, the second game being only seven innings.

On Wednesday, the baseball team traveled to Cambridge, MA to take on the M.I.T. Beavers. Both teams evidently brought their bats, and the Beavers pulled out a 14-11 victory.

Over spring break, the baseball team was hard at work, kicking off the season with a bicoastal thirteen-game road trip. The Cards traveled south to Georgia for the first five games of the trip, after which they traveled to California for the remaining eight. The team started slow, going 3-6 in the first nine games of the season before picking it up, sweeping a three-game series with UMass-Dartmouth before falling to the Division III powerhouse, Chapman University.

After a frustrating 2006 season in which the Cards went 13-19-1 and failed to qualify for the NESCAC tournament, the baseball team is looking to rebound with a robust and productive season in 2007. Although the team lost several key players to graduation last May, including the legendary and Baltimore-banned Jeff Maier ’06, Wesleyan’s all-time hits leader, the preseason has been characterized by a feeling of hopefulness.

The women’s volleyball team’s season ended in the NESCAC tournament semifinals Saturday, as the team fell to third seed Amherst in a close five-game match. A day earlier, the Cardinals had defeated Bowdoin in a four-game, first-round victory. The Cards came into the Friday’s match with a lot of confidence, having swept Bowdoin just one week before.

The Cards emerged victorious last weekend, sweeping three matches in nine straight games against visitors Bowdoin, Colby and Bates. In the final weekend of NESCAC play, the Cards broke a four way tie for second place with Amherst, Conn. College, and Tufts, to claim the second seed in the NESCAC tournament taking place this coming weekend at Williams.

The volleyball team defeated Salve Regina in three straight games Tuesday, improving to 15-8 on the season. The match became an exercise in discipline for the Cards, as they clearly outmatched the visiting team. The Cards figured that Salve Regina’s slow pace of play would challenge them, but they managed to keep up the tempo and energy.

This past Saturday the Cards traveled to U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut for a pair of matches, one against the home team and one against Roger Williams College. The Cards put in a strong effort and split the two matches, opening with a loss to clear favorite Coast Guard and finishing with a resounding win over Roger Williams.

At the New England Open Championship, Saturday, Oct. 7, the men’s cross country team had mixed results, finishing 14th of 45 squads and second among Division III teams in the competition. Although Wesleyan finished in front of seven NESCAC squads, they finished four spots behind a surprisingly adept Bowdoin team.

The Cardinals were less-than-pleased this weekend as the volleyball team fell in a heated match against rival Amherst College in the opening night of the Wesleyan Invitational. The Cards went 2-1 in the tournament, rebounding the next day with victories over both Wheaton and Trinity. Although the loss will not officially contribute to their NESCAC record, the Amherst match was the focus of the weekend.

The men’s golf team opened its fall season with a string of solid performances at three separate invitational tournaments. At the Bowdoin Invitational on Sept. 9 and 10, the Cards placed 12th of 15 teams and ninth of the 10 NESCAC teams. The Bowdoin tournament was, in many ways, a preview for the NESCAC Championship, which will occur at the end of September.

After opening with a hard fought loss to Brandeis in which the squad fell in three close games, 24-30, 27-30, and 28-30, the team went on to defeat Wheaton and Smith.
