Public Safety (PSafe) will soon be rolling through campus on new T3 Segways. The T3 Segways have three wheels and can go up to 25 mph, much faster than most regular Segways that can go up to 12 mph.

“We have a Segway we’ve been demo-ing,” said Director of Public Safety Dave Meyer. “I’m expecting to make a purchase on a T3 here very soon, which is a three-wheeled Segway. That, and our golf carts, and a few other things can help with the internal parts of campus.”

Meyer anticipates that PSafe officers will be trained on a voluntary basis.

“People who want to use it will have to get trained in it,” he said. “I imagine the majority of people will eventually [learn it].”

The Segways are part of PSafe’s efforts to become more sustainable.

“We’re going to limit the number of cars out at certain times of the year, usually during the summer when students aren’t here,” Meyer said. “We have one hybrid; we’re getting two new hybrids this year. [The Segways] are fairly versatile, and they move right along, so between that and the bikes, we do have some options we can use to limit the use of vehicles when they’re not necessary.”
