Variety is the spice of life. Coincidentally, it’s also the spice of the Wesleyan Film Series. I’m not sure if that quite makes sense, but let’s roll with it. This quarter, we’ve programmed such a broad-based, wide-ranging group of films that people have begun calling this the “United Nations calendar.” And by people, I mean me, just now. Nevertheless, we’ve shown horror of all types (The Shining, House of Wax), a trippy time-bending twister (12 Monkeys), a transcendent cinematic orgasm of electronica (Oddsac), and a dementedly irreverent Eastern European romp (The Firemen’s Ball). Later in the calendar, we’ve got a Far-Eastern Western (The Good, the Bad, and the Weird), a face-meltingly-complex comedy (Playtime), and a textbook lesson in robotic bad-assery (Robocop). In fact, I’d like to make the claim that one can attend the film series for the rest of the quarter and never see two similar films. Yep—as a senior, I’m happy to say that the oft-touted label of “Diversity University” that ole Wes wears proudly (and that I was sold on during my first campus tour)—is certainly in accord with our film series choices this quarter. Heck, in celebration of such heterogeneity, I’ll be writing this week’s movie descriptions in haiku, just to mix things up—so there.
