As the men’s and women’s crew teams get back on the water in preparation for the fall season, each has the continuity to improve in the coming year.

The men’s crew team is looking for some success following a mediocre season in 2011-12. Under coach Phil Carney, who is entering his 25th year at Wesleyan, the men’s first varsity eight finished last year with a 6-6 record. To cap off the year, the men came in 12th place at the ECAC Championships in Worcester, Mass.

Spencer Hattendorf ’12 graduated from the varsity eight, and the remaining seven are Bryce Hollingsworth ’13, Noah Solomon ’14, David Hinds ’13, Sam Hoefle ’13, Ben Record ’15, Peter Martin ’14, Trevor Michelson ’13, and Grant Nikols ’13. This past summer, Michelson was chosen to represent the New York athletic club in the USRowing Club championships in Camden County, N.J. He successfully medaled in all three events in which he took part. Michelson was an integral part of the varsity eight during dual season and ended the year with a NESCAC Sportsmanship Award. This year he will be co-captain.

On the women’s side, WesCrew is ready to continue building on last year’s success. The Lady Cardinals’ first varsity eight ended the year with a 9-3 record and rose as high as eighth in the Division III rankings. However, Wesleyan came in 11th place at the New England Regatta and ninth at the ECCAC Championship. To finish off the spring, the first varsity eight cruised to a fifth-place finish at the NESCAC Championship.

Head coach Pat Tynan will also retain most of his rowers in his fourth season at Wesleyan. Although they are without captain, All-American, All-NESCAC, and All-ECAC rower Greer Dent ’12, the Lady Cardinals return the remainder of their fantastic first boat. This year’s seniors, Margo Tercek and Robin Cotter, are sure to lead the squad in the coming year. Dent was not the only decorated rower in the boat, as Tercek and Cotter were both named national scholar athletes by the CRCA.

Both the men’s and women’s teams will open the season with an away contest on Sunday, Sept. 30 at the Head of the Textile in Lowell, Mass.
