While he may research late medieval artifacts of South India, Chair of the Archeology Program and Professor of Art History Phil Wagoner’s playlist comes from an entirely different intersection in time and space: think Terrapin Station, Haight-Ashbury, and the rainbow-tinged summertime tunes of pyschedelic jam-lords the Grateful Dead.
“Confession: I’m an unreformed Deadhead,” said Wagoner. Known for their marathon free jams and sunshine melodies, the Dead’s massive shows remain the stuff of legend—for Wagoner, there’s one in particular that stands out. Winterland Arena in San Francisco, December 29, 1977, now immortalized on the live album “Dick’s Picks Vol. 10,” has lingered on the lips of Deadheads everywhere, and Wagoner is no exception.
