Upon concluding another weekend against NESCAC competitors, men’s soccer is through half the season without losing a match.

Wesleyan faced the Middlebury Panthers (0-2-2) in Vermont on Saturday morning in what would turn into a double overtime 0-0 stalemate, its second draw of the season, and its first match against a league opponent not ending in victory. While the Cardinals exhibited a tightly controlled passing game, they had trouble penetrating a solid Middlebury defense. Similarly, Middlebury was unable to garner many convincing opportunities of its own. While the Panthers outshot the Cards by a tally of 14-6 in the 110 minutes of play, both squads managed only three shots on goal. Wesleyan netminder Adam Purdy ’13, last week’s NESCAC Player of the Week, achieved his 18th career shutout, breaking the former Wesleyan record of 17.5 held by Dave Barrett ’92.

On Sunday afternoon, the Cardinals found themselves back on Jackson Field for a match against the Colby White Mules (1-3). Following a familiar pattern for this season, Wesleyan jumped out in front in the third minute as forward Greg Shaheen ’15 found a pass on the right side from Chris Kuehn ’13 and buried the ball inside the near post for the first goal of his college career. The Cardinals found some insurance in the 31st minute as forward Walter Rodriguez ’13 took a free kick from the right side of the field, which he curled into the near side of the net for his second goal of the season.

In spite of the first half deficit, Colby refused to quit, taking 16 shots on the day to Wesleyan’s 17. However, the Cardinal defense dug in deep, and Purdy contributed eight stops for another shutout and a 2-0 victory.

Following the weekend, Wesleyan maintains its lead in the NESCAC standings with a 6-0-1 record. Next up, the Cardinals see a respite from league play as they host the Coast Guard Academy (4-3-1 overall) Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 4 p.m.
