Volleyball captain Casey Reed '12 dominated Albertus Magnus with 11 kills, 10 digs and three aces.

Coming off a 1-3 weekend at the Vassar Invitational, the Wesleyan Cardinals volleyball team christened their 2011 home slate with a convincing 3-0 victory over Albertus Magnus, an in-state opponent from New Haven.

In the first set, Wes took control from the get-go, taking a 6-1 lead and rolling to a 25-7 set win. The second set started a bit slow for the Cardinals, but they steamrolled through the latter half, and took the set by a score of 25-10. The third set saw the Cardinals and Falcons get off to a 10-10 tie before Wes snared 15 of the final 20 points en route to a 25-15 victory. The victory was the second sweep in a row for the Cardinals, who took down Montclair State 3-0 in the final game at Vassar last weekend.

Standout offensive performances for Wes came from Kim Farris ’14, captain Casey Reed ’12, and Monica Leslie ’14, who recorded 13, 11, and eight kills, respectively, to lead the Cardinals. Farris chipped in three blocks and Reed scored three aces and notched ten digs, tying Katie Schad ’13 for second in digs on the day. Jeanne McPhee ’13 led Wes with 12 digs, adding to her team-leading total of 72. Laura Yim ’13, the team’s primary setter, had 24 assists on the night, giving her a team-high 78 on the year.

The victory brings the Cardinals’ record to 2-3 (0-0 NESCAC). NESCAC conference play is on tap for Wes, with home matches versus Amherst on Friday at 6 p.m. and Middlebury on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.. Both matches will be in the Silloway Gymnasium, with a “blackout” scheduled for the audience at Friday’s match.
