With nine letter-winners returning from the 2010 squad, the Wesleyan women’s volleyball team promises to be a force to be reckoned with in the 2011 season. Last year, the team concluded with a 10-13 record, but managed to go up against top NESCAC competitors, such as Trinity, Bowdoin, and Middlebury, in neck-and-neck battles.
Notably, the Lady Cards put up an especially strong fight against the top-seeded Amherst Lord Jeffs in the first round of the 2010 NESCAC Tournament last season. Despite the ultimate loss to the Jeffs, the Cards proved themselves as a truly fierce competitor within the NESCAC.
Returning to the court this season will be Cardinal team captain and top hitter Casey Reed ’12, who had a phenomenal 2010 season in which she averaged 3.69 kills per set.
Other key veteran players will be sophomores Kim Farris and Monica Leslie, who combined for an impressive 3.35 kills per set and 1.52 blocks a set. The dynamic duo will be sure to make up for a strong front line.
Also back on the court on the defensive side will be Jeanne McPhee ’13, who will take the place of two-time All-American and NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year Ruby Hernandez ’11.
Wesleyan volleyball’s 2011 season will kick into gear on the road this weekend on Sept. 9 and 10 with a tournament at Vassar College, and will host their home opener on Tuesday, Sept. 13, in a matchup against Albertus Magnus.
