On Saturday, April 23, the Wesleyan women’s lacrosse team took the field wearing their home uniforms for the last time in 2011. They welcomed Little Three rival Amherst to campus, looking for their first NESCAC victory and the opportunity to even out their season record at .500. However, the Lord Jeffs were looking to clinch the annual Little Three title, having defeated Williams earlier in the season.  Unfortunately for Wes, Senior Day was spoiled, as the Lord Jeffs prevailed with a 13-6 victory.

Kayla Ellman ’13 again showcased her scoring prowess early in the contest, notching the first tally of the day. Amherst responded quickly, putting home the next six goals to build up a five-goal cushion, which the Cardinals cut to a 7-3 deficit at the half. After Lydia Kring ’13 notched her 24th goal of the season to open the second-half scoring, Wes trailed by just three goals. This was the closest the Cardinals would come, however, for the remainder of the contest. Amherst was on a roll for the rest of the second half, outscoring Wes 6-2, providing the final 13-6 tally.

Six Cardinals scored one goal apiece, including Kaylin Berger ’13, whose 27th goal of the season ties her for the team-lead with Ellman. The other goal scorers were Liz Chabot ’12, Hillary Cook ’14, and tri-captain Allie Lynch ’11, who added another point to her team-leading total of 38 in the last home contest of her illustrious career. Alexa Narzikul ’12 anchored the defensive effort, giving the Cardinals yet another solid performance on the back line.

The loss leaves Wes with a 6-8 overall record, including a 0-8 mark in NESCAC play. The squad will wrap up its season with a road game on Friday, April 29, at Connecticut College. Last season, the Cardinals defeated the Camels in a thrilling 17-13 contest.
