The Wesleyan women’s tennis team earned their fourth win in a row this past Wednesday, April 20 in Middletown. Wesleyan breezed past the Holy Cross Crusaders for their 10th win this year, marking the sixth season in a row the women’s tennis program has seen double digits in the win column. The Lady Cardinals snubbed the Crusaders 9-0 in the first tennis match Wesleyan has had with Holy Cross in 36 years. Every match was won in straight sets. Genevieve Aniello ’13 came close to dropping her second set, but hung on with a 6-1, 7-6 win at the #1 spot. Junior Sarah Miller downed her opponent 6-3, 6-3 at #2. Freshmen Grace Smith and Kiley Robbins won their matches 6-1, 6-1, and 6-2, 6-0 at #3 and #4, respectively. Team captain Linda McDougal ’11 had the most decisive singles victory with a 6-0, 6-1 win at #5, and Nicki Softness ’14 would complete the sweep with a 6-2, 6-4 win at #6.

“Although it wasn’t a NESCAC matchup, everyone played really well and came away with big wins,” Miller said. “Overall, I think that our singles are getting stronger every match and our doubles teams are definitely improving as well.”

The women next face Smith College this Saturday, April 23. The Cardinals have won their last four matches against the Pioneers, the most recent of which came in 2008.  Against Smith, Wesleyan holds 4-1 all time record in women’s tennis.
