Wesleyan women’s basketball ended its season this past weekend, attempting to play the spoiler against powerhouses Colby and Bowdoin.  Against the Colby Mules, the Cardinals got off to a good start, and the game was tied at eight apiece seven minutes in.  However, Colby scored 18 of the next 19 points to take control of the game.  Despite the Cards fighting back to cut the halftime margin to 35-24, and pulling within six as the second half started, the Mules secured victory by going on a 16-2 run.  Colby won 67-49 to improve its record in the all-time series between the schools to 15-12.

The next day, the Cards took to the court against the Bowdoin Polar Bears, who is just behind Colby in the NESCAC standings.  Despite losing a rough game the night before, the Cardinals came out hot, leaping out to a 19-6 lead just six and a half minutes into the game.  However, Bowdoin soon asserted itself, racing back to reduce the Wesleyan lead to 33-32 at halftime, and the Polar Bears started the second half with a 16-4 run.  After that, the Cardinals were never able to get the deficit back into single digits, and Bowdoin finished the game strong, winning 78-51.

Despite a rough season that did not include any NESCAC wins, the Cardinals are only losing three seniors.  Unfortunately, McKinley Tennant ’11, Allie Southam ’11, and Erin Gold ’11, provided much of the scoring punch for these Cardinals, and they were all regular starters.  However, Eileen Gaffney ’12 and Sam LaCroce ’12 started every game and were the number one and number three scorers on the team, respectively.  They will be expected to carry the load of a team with 11 returning players, and hopefully they will be up to the challenge.
