There’s a type of lens called a tilt-shift lens, seen on the right. It consists of tilting and shifting the lens to adjust a really narrow depth of field (the area of the environment that’s in focus), enabling you to focus selectively. The coolest part of this is that it makes anything you take a picture of look as if it’s a miniature. This is because when you take a picture of something really small (macro photography) the depth of field usually ends up very shallow, making only a small section of the object in focus. This is just another example of how much people are tuned to photography and video as a close representation of the world. We equate extremely shallow depths of field as a picture of something small, lens flares as something being really bright, etc. (You probably noticed the effect on The Social Network)

It’s like watching a bunch of insects.
