The women’s soccer team traveled to Bristol, R.I. this Monday to take on out-of-conference powerhouse Roger Williams University. This was the first ever match between the two teams in school history. Two first-half goals helped the Cardinals (4-4-4) snap the 11-game winning streak of the Roger Williams Hawks (13-4-0). Previously, the only losses the Hawks had suffered had come from three New England top-10 ranked teams, #1 Eastern Conn., #3 Brandeis, and #7 Wheaton. The Cardinals are the only unranked team to defeat the Hawks this season.

The Wes women wasted no time in setting the tempo in their favor. Just two minutes into the game, Barrie Lindsay ’12 played a ball into the right side of the box, which Hillary Biggs ’12 shot into the left corner of the goal. This was Biggs’ first goal of the season.

In the 37th minute of the game, Amy Toig ’14 increased the lead to 2-0 off a pass from Lindsay. Toig, who also netted her first career marker, shot the ball over the Hawk’s keeper’s head. Toig nearly extended the Cardinals’ lead to 3-0 in the 41st minute, but her shot went wide on the right post. The Cardinals dominated the first half on all fronts. Defensively, Goalie Grace Bomann ’14 needed to stop only two shots to keep the Hawks off the scoreboard.

The Hawks came out strong in the second half, trying to even the game, tallying 15 shots in the second half. Goalie Clare Colton ’12 proved to be a huge asset as she collected six saves for the Wes women. However, the Hawks determination paid off, as they were able to get on the scoreboard in the 75th minute of the game off of a rebound shot. RWU’sLaurin Pendleton sent a ball across the box to teammate Noelle Marston who fired a shot. Colton was there for the save, but the ball slipped out of her grasp and Noel was able to score off the loose ball.

The Cardinals were able to keep the game on their terms for the rest of the match, and won 2-1. Next up for Wesleyan is their last regular season NESCAC game against Connecticut College this Friday, Oct 29 at Franklin Field. With a victory over Conn. College, the Cardinals could be seeded as high as fifth going into post-season play.
