The case of Stephen P. Morgan, the man accused of fatally shooting Johanna Justin-Jinich ’10 at the Red & Black Café in May 2009, was continued on Tuesday to Nov. 9, as state mental health evaluations continue as reported in the Hartford Courant.
On May 25, nearly a year after the murder, Middletown Superior Court Judge Patrick Clifford granted permission for state prosecutors to begin psychiatric evaluations of Morgan, who is preparing a case of “mental disease or defect.” During Morgan’s last appearance in August, state prosecutor Timothy Liston stated that it was unlikely state evaluations would be complete by the October court date.
According to court documents, the defense’s mental health evaluations were completed by Yale professors Dr. Howard V. Zonana and Dr. Madelon V. Baranoski, who will testify at Morgan’s trial.
According to the Courant, defense lawyer Richard Brown said that once the state’s mental health expert reaches a conclusion, negotiations will begin to determine whether the case can be resolved without trial.
Morgan is charged with murder, intimidation, and carrying a pistol without a permit.
