The women’s tennis team wrapped up its spring 2010 season this past weekend with a trip to Williamstown, Mass. to take on the Williams College Ephs. Hoping to come away with a final win, the Cardinals put up a strong fight, but unfortunately were no match for the Ephs, and returned to Wes with a disappointing 9-0 loss.
In the singles rounds, the Cards were dominated by the Ephs and finished 0-6. Leading the way at the number one spot, Anika Fischer ‘10 fell 2-6, 4-6. Sarah Miller ‘12 followed in the number two spot with another disappointing 1-6, 0-6 loss. Meredith Holmes ’10 also had a challenging matchup at the number three spot and was ultimately defeated 1-6, 2-6. The number four player, Linda McDougal ‘11, fought hard, but came up short and finished with a 3-6, 1-6 loss. Casey Simchik ’10 played a difficult match at the number five spot, and unfortunately fell 0-6, 0-6. Due to a knee injury, Genevieve Aniello ’13 was unable to compete in the singles rounds, so Wesleyan pushed up its lineup, giving Hannah Berkman ’12 the chance to step in at the number six. Berkman made the most of her match, fiercely battling against her opponent, but was unable to come away with the win and fell 4-6, 3-6.
Williams once again overpowered Wesleyan in the doubles rounds, preventing the Cards from picking up any points. Fischer and Miller came together at the number one spot, but were unable to handle their opponents. The Cardinal duo started out strong, but the Ephs quickly stole the game, resulting in a 1-8 loss for the Cards. The number two pair, Aniello and McDougal, also fiercely competed, but could not hold on until the end and finished with another 1-8 defeat. Holding down the number three spot, Simchik and freshman Taylor Morales closed out the day for the Cards with a final 2-8 loss.
Although this loss prevented the Cards from moving into post-season play, Wesleyan women’s tennis had a solid regular season, finishing 10-7 on the year, and 2-7 in the NESCAC. Even after a disappointing season finale, the Cards were able to reflect back on the season with positive attitudes.
“It was fun to finish off the season playing the number one ranked team in [the] NESCAC,” McDougal said. “We have had a great season under the leadership of our three seniors, and we are all looking forward to starting up again next fall.”
