Middletown:

Two parents may be a bit premature in preparing their kid to go to Wesleyan. Suspected drug dealers Kristian Augeri and Thomas Way faced a Middletown Superior Court judge yesterday after police obtained a video of their 3-year-old child smoking marijuana. Police found the video on a digital camera during a search of the couple’s home. Way, who was seen in the video wiping spit from the glass bowl for the child, was charged with risk of injury to the child, criminal possession of a pistol or revolver, possession of a stolen firearm, failure to properly store a firearm and use of drug paraphernalia. Augeri was charged with risk of injury to the child, interfering with a police search, resisting arrest and use of drug paraphernalia.

Hartford:

After allowing an innocent man to spend 18 years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit, Duane Foster finally pled guilty on Tuesday to kidnapping and raping a woman. In 1988, Foster attacked the victim in Hartford as she was getting into her car, and drove them off to an isolated area. The victim later identified a different man, James C. Tillman, in a police photo lineup. Despite offering an alibi that he was with friends the night of the attack, Tillman was found guilty and sentenced to 45 years in prison. He was finally exonerated after a DNA test in 2006, and Foster was finally identified in another test performed the following year in Virginia. Foster’s criminal record dates back to 1977. The victim may be present or submit comments to be read on her behalf at the sentencing, which is scheduled to take place today.

New Haven:

Yale University has issued a new ban on sexual relations between faculty and undergraduate students. The ban was included in the January update of the faculty handbook, and announced in the March/April issue of Yale Alumni Magazine. Previously, Yale professors were prohibited from having relationships with students over whom they had “direct pedagogical or supervisory responsibilities.” The new, comprehensive policy is meant to recognize “unequal institutional power inherent in the teacher-student relationship and the potential for coercion, because of their age and relative lack of maturity.”

A Regional Water Authority Co. crew accidentally ruptured a natural gas line while working on an intersection last Tuesday. The pipe was found to be a low-pressure line and only homes in the immediate area were evacuated. Firefighters monitored the gas levels both inside homes and in the sewers. Natural gas is considered explosive at concentrations between five to fifteen percent of the atmosphere. The gas levels around the rupture site stayed well below that threshold.
