The men’s tennis team traveled to Amherst on Thursday afternoon in search of its first win against the Lord Jeffs since 2003. The ninth-ranked Jeffs easily took care of Wesleyan, however, earning a 9-0 win and improving to 31-1 in their last 32 matches against the Cardinals.

Amherst cruised to a trio of doubles wins to open the match. At No. 1, Jeff Legunn ’13 and Michael Piderit ’12 fell 2-8, while the No. 3 pairing of Don Kleckner ’13 and Robert Troyer ’12 was defeated 0-8. Alex Hirsch ’13 and Ravy Uong ’13 had the closest match of the afternoon, falling 5-8 at No. 2.

Things did not improve for Wesleyan in singles play, although there were a number of close matches. Legunn took his No. 1 Amherst adversary to three sets, ultimately falling 5-7, 1-6, 0-6. Piderit (No. 2; 1-6, 6-7), Kleckner (No. 5; 5-7, 2-6) and Michael Glen ’13 (No. 6; 1-6, 6-7) made their opponents work for their wins as well. Hirsch fell 1-6, 2-6 at No. 3, and Uong was defeated in straight sets at No. 4, 0-6, 2-6.

The team will attempt to get back in the win column on Saturday as the Cardinals host Middlebury, an opponent against which Wesleyan holds a 21-4 overall record.
