After their debut last March at Summerfields and their lunchtime launch this past fall at the Usdan Marketplace, Eco To-Go containers are pulling their first all-nighter at Usdan, or at least staying up until Late Night closes.

“We wanted to give people the option of being more environmentally friendly [when they go to Late Night],” said Chair of Wesleyan Student Assembly Dining Committee Ben Firke ’12. “I think it’s great to reduce waste.”

Late Night, the Usdan Marketplace dining option open daily from 10 p.m. to 1:30 a.m., offers a made-to-order menu, as opposed to the all-you-can-eat buffet available breakfast through dinner.  Since Late Night already used disposable to-go containers, the Dining Committee and Resident District Manager of Bon Appétit Michael Strumpf had an easy job making the switch to offer the more sustainable Eco To-Go containers.

Additionally, after discussions with the Dining Committee, Bon Appétit now provides reusable cups and compost-able Greenware cups, instead of disposable ones.

Despite the fact that sales of Eco To-Go containers have been slower than expected, according to Firke, the containers do have a presence at the Marketplace.

“You walk around Usdan at lunch, and you definitely see people with their containers,” Firke said.

Firke added that the Dining Committee has yet to receive any figures to indicate whether the Eco To-Go containers’ debut at Late Night has influenced their sales this semester.
