Corrections: “University To Unveil William Manchester Writings Amid Return of JFK Manuscript” (Vol. CXLVI, No. 26) misstated that William Manchester’s writings will be unveiled this year; the exhibition occurred in 2009. The article also incorrectly stated that the manuscript is returning to the University; it was returned years ago. The manuscript is not, as the article implied, under the control of the Kennedy family; rather it is being held in University Special Collections, which is bound by a court order to keep specific parts of the document closed to the public.

In addition, Assistant University Archivist Valerie Gillespie was misquoted; the quote should have read, “none of us have even seen it.” “Jane Eisner ‘77 Teaching a New Generation of Writers” (Vol. CXLVI, No. 26) misattributed a quote to Piccio Lorenzo ‘10; Zack Malter ‘13 should have been quoted. In “Koeppel ‘79 Brings Journalism to Wesleyan Undergraduates” (Vol. CXLVI, No. 26) a name was misspelled; B.S. Nai Paul should have been read V.S. Naipaul.  We regret these errors.

  • Questions remain

The magnitude of error must not be glossed over. The Manchester article could very well have exposed the University and/or Ms. Gillespie to federal investigation and/or litigation.

So what effort – if any – is the Argus making to identify the failure points in its editorial process that led to the writing and publication of such a harmfully inaccurate piece? What changes will be enacted to prevent the recurrence of such inexcusable disregard for fact?

Surely your “regret” is heartfelt, but the community deserves answers. Such carelessness can only be flushed out by full exposure and a transparent review process.

  • really?

jesus CHRIST you guys get your shit together. you’re fucking embarrassing.

Based on more recent screwups, the answer is “none.”
