Members of the University community recently established the Johanna Justin-Jinich ’10 Memorial Scholarship Fund, which to date has raised an impressive total of $239,000 from nearly 1,000 individual gifts.

Students, parents, alumni, faculty, staff, friends, the Middletown community, Johanna’s community in Colorado and even people with no direct relation to the University or Justin-Jinich have donated money to the Fund, according to Associate Vice President for Development Ann Goodwin. Additionally, Dar Williams ’89 dedicated her Reunion and Commencement concert last spring to Justin-Jinich, and proceeds from the event were donated to the Fund.

After several community members expressed a desire to honor Justin-Jinich’s life, her family was contacted and, with their approval, the Fund was established.

Red and Black Café—where Justin-Jinich worked since her freshman year—will also be contributing to the Fund through the sale of new T-shirts created in her memory. Designed collectively by the staff, the shirts feature the Red and Black logo on the front and a PACE flag on the back, in honor of the same flag that Justin-Jinich hung in her dorm room. Although staff members at Red and Black Café now wear the T-shirts as uniforms, they are also on sale for $25. Twenty percent of the proceeds will go to the Fund.

The Fund will be distributed annually to students with financial need. Students will not apply to receive this specific scholarship—awards will be given out through the regular financial aid process.
