Women’s ice hockey co-captain Hannah Jackson ’09, women’s crew tri-captain Beth Ogata ’09, and men’s crew captain Charlie Weiss ’09 were recently named the 2008-09 recipients of the Roger Maynard ’37 Memorial Award. The award is presented annually to the outstanding male and female student-athletes in their final year of eligibility.
A Neuroscience and Behavior major with a 4.03 GPA, Jackson played in 90 of a possible 91 games during her four-year career and amassed 57 career points, tallying 24 goals to go along with 33 assists. She led the team in scoring in each of her four seasons, including a career-high 17 points in 2007-08.
Ogata is in her third season as part of the Cardinals’ varsity eight. She held a seat in the varsity eight in 2005-06 and 2006-07 and was a member of the varsity four in 2007-08. She has helped lead the Cardinals to a 7-1 record and a ranking of sixth nationally among Division III crews. Ogata is an Earth and Environmental Sciences major with a GPA of 4.11.
Weiss, who is the sole men’s crew captain this season, has been a mainstay on the varsity eight for the past two seasons. He began his Wesleyan career as a member of the second varsity eight in 2004-05 before missing the 2005-06 campaign while serving as a volunteer teacher in Texas, staying the whole year due to the influx of additional students displaced by Hurricane Katrina. He has been a part of three New England medal-winning crews at Wesleyan and has helped lead the Cardinals to a 4-1 record and ranking of third in New England. Weiss is an English major with a 3.80 GPA.
Jackson, Ogata and Weiss were honored at an April 3 luncheon in support of National Student-Athlete Day.
