The team is sending two wrestlers to Nationals, has the second-highest team GPA in the 15-team New England Wrestling Association, has gone .500 or better seven out of the last nine seasons, and has a coach who saved an alum’s life in the fitness center. Is there anything they can’t do?

Three wrestlers on the team racked up 30 or more wins: Dan Bloom ’10 (33-4), Josh Berkovic ’10 (32-10) and Greg Hurd ’10 (35-4). Both Bloom and Hurd are headed to the NCAA Championships. Hurd finished the season a perfect 16-0 in dual matches, while Bloom (12-2) and Berkovic (14-2) were almost equally dominant. Wesleyan also had a pair of wrestlers who crossed the 20-win mark: Chris Alvanos ’11 (22-15) and David Bachy ’10, who finished he season 24-14. Heavyweight Dan Conroy ’11 nearly crossed the 20-win barrier as well, finishing the winter 18-10.

It was also quite a season for stud head coach and all-around good guy Drew Black, who earned his 100th career victory as the team flattened Coast Guard 33-9 (its sixth straight win over the Bears) on Jan. 25. Black also saved the life of an alumnus who suffered a heart attack in the fitness center the Friday before the team’s season-ending matches against Oneonta State and Williams. While the Ephs trounced the Cards, wrestling is still the only Wesleyan team with a winning record against Williams (43-37-2 all-time). The combined successes of this amazing group make it an obvious choice for the top men’s team of the winter.
