The women’s hockey team remained mired in its losing streak with a loss at Salve Regina on Tuesday night. In this non-conference match-up, the Seahawks took a 3-0 win against the Cardinals, netting one goal each period. Wesleyan now stands at 2-19-1 on the year.

The Seahawks took the lead 14:03 into the first period. Following a scrum in front of the net, Salve Regina gained control of the puck and sent it through the five-hole for a lead it would not relinquish. The Cards continued to play hard in the second period, but at 14:10, the Seahawks tallied their second goal of the night with a weak shot that trickled over the goal line. The Seahawks’ third goal of the night came at the beginning of the third period at 3:19 when a shot was fired top-shelf past Stemerman’s stick side. Wesleyan recovered to show some life late in the third period with a brief two-player advantage with 1:44 remaining. The Cardinals had a number of chances to score in this opportune situation but were unable to capitalize, suffering their third shutout in their last five games.

Despite never leading in the game, the team had a positive outlook following the contest.

“It was nice to see us not give up and play hard until the end,” said Sena Ito ’11.

The team will need this positive outlook as they enter the home stretch of their season. Middlebury and Williams will be the opponents in the Cardinals’ final matches of the year. Wesleyan has been eliminated from contention for a NESCAC Championship berth but will look to play spoiler this weekend against second-place Middlebury and seventh-place Williams. The Cardinals are particularly excited for an opportunity to exact revenge on the Ephs. In Wesleyan’s fourth game of the season, the Cardinals held a 1-0 lead over Williams after a goal by Ito 6:04 into the first period, but the Ephs pulled their goalie and tied the game with 27 seconds left. The teams then played a scoreless overtime for a 1-1 tie.

“The outcome of the Williams game was unfortunate,” Ito said. “We want revenge.”

The Cardinals, who were forced to sit four starters against Salve Regina, also look to return to their usual starting line for their final two games of the season. However, the weekend’s action will not include Heather Lindgren ’11, who has two goals and two assists for the season. Lindgren suffered a knee injury last Saturday in a loss to Bowdoin and will not return to the ice this season. The Cardinals are looking forward to the return of their captain and assistant captain to close out the season.

“It will be nice to have our starters back for the last two games of the season,” said Alex Bean ’11.
