The men’s soccer team dropped a closely contested match with Wheaton College on Tuesday, by the score of 2-1 in overtime. The Cards fell to 2-3-1 overall with a 1-1-1 record in NESCAC play. After going 2-0-1 in its first three contests of the season, Wesleyan has come up short in each of its past three games.

Though Wheaton’s Yuri Moreira finished a long throw just a minute and a half into the first overtime to catapult his team to a big non-conference win, Matt Nevin ’09 started the game’s scoring, converting on a penalty kick in the 32nd minute after a hand ball in the box by a Wheaton defender.

The Cardinals were unable to hold on to the lead, however, as the Thunder tied the score about 12 minutes later on a blast off the foot of Wheaton’s Adam Sussman that got past Cardinal keeper Nigel Stacey ’11.

The Wesleyan offense failed to produce many opportunities, and managed only three shots on goal. Stacey saved three of the five shots that he faced that day, and just barely missed getting his mitts on the game-winning goal.

After this rough stretch, the Cards will look to reverse its fortunes this weekend in a NESCAC match-up with Colby. After three consecutive road games against Colby, Coast Guard and Williams, Wesleyan will return to Jackson Field on Wednesday, Oct. 15 against Western Connecticut State University.
