The first annual Social Justice Day was held on Saturday, March 29. The idea behind the event was to bring students, student groups, staff members and faculty together to discuss a topic that tends not to get a lot of attention. While attendance was lacking, the event was well received by both the University and the attendees.

Over 90 students attended the luncheon in Daniel Family Commons and about 50 students went to the different sessions, all of which covered aspects of social justice.

“The day went very well,” said Wesleyan Student Assembly President Matt Ball ’08, one of the driving forces behind the event. “I think after President Roth talked about it on his blog, we built momentum and had quite a few [lecture and speaker] submissions.”

Presenters at Social Justice Day included professors“one from the University and three from other institutions”and students. Ball anticipates that in the coming years Social Justice day will be a major event on this campus.

“There’s a lot of room to grow,” he said. “This was the starting year, but we hope eventually that Social Justice Day will be very well attended, something that people will really plan for and get excited about.”
