Wesleyan fell to Trinity 1-0 on Saturday in Hartford in a cold, drizzling rain. It was a heartbreaking loss for the Cardinals who put forth a solid effort on both sides of the ball, but failed to come away with a win in their second one goal loss of the season. The Bantams scored early in the game, and Wesleyan spent the rest of the game looking for the equalizer. The offense was kept quiet as the Trinity goalie upheld the shutout with an impressive seven saves. Wes finished the game with fourteen shots, with Trinity close behind with twelve.

“We started the game a little flat and on our heels. It was a good performance for about 60 minutes but it takes a full 90 minutes to win a game,” said Coach Eva Meredith.

Gavi Elkind ’09 and Andrea Giuliano ’09 split time in goal again for the third time this season. Elkind made three saves, giving up the only goal of the game in the 23rd minute. Giuliano came in and made five saves to keep the team in the game in the second half.

The scoring chances were there for the Cardinals, but they struggled to put one away. The efforts ended up being too little, too late; a breakaway shot from Dasha Battelle ’11 was cleanly swept up by the Trinity goalie with just three minutes left to play.

“We had a great chance to score only six or so minutes into the game but a Trinity defender cleared the ball off the goal line,” Battelle said. “We had many opportunities to score, hitting the cross bar a couple of times and a breakaway chance at the end of the game.”

Wesleyan has scored just four goals on 58 shots this season, all four goals coming in the Mount Holyoke game. Meanwhile, Wesleyan’s opponents have scored two goals on only 17 shots on goal, but unfortunately both goals have been the deciding factors in Wesleyan’s NESCAC losses to Williams and Trinity. The offensive power is there for the Cardinals; they just need to find the back of the net.

Wesleyan plays away again on Wednesday night at winless Smith College, which is coming off a double overtime tie with Skidmore. The Cardinals will look to gain some momentum going into next weekend’s home game against Middlebury.
