On Saturday afternoon, Rachel Soriano ’06 was struck by a car while attempting to cross Church Street. At press time, she remained in critical but stable condition in Hartford Hospital, according to Director of Communications Justin Harmon.

Soriano, who came to Wesleyan from Quezon City, Phillipines was on her way to a dinner for Freeman scholars held in the Butterfield dorms. According to the Middletown Police Department, a 2005 Chevy Impala driven by 48-year-old Erin Kelly of Middletown was going uphill on Church Street at approximately 6 p.m. when it struck Soriano, who was crossing the street near the Davenport Campus Center.

The police said that a helicopter brought her to the trauma unit at the Hartford Hospital.

“This is a tragic accident,” Harmon said. “President and Mrs. Bennet, Dean of the College Maria Cruz-Saco and members of the Dean’s staff have visited with Rachel’s family and continue to offer our support. Rachel’s mother asks that we keep her in our thoughts and prayers.”

Public Safety was unable to comment on the matter due to the ongoing investigation.
