The women’s ice hockey team played several tough games last week, hosting conference powerhouses Middlebury and Williams as well as two tough out of conference teams, Utica and SUNY Cortland. They lost all four games and fell to 1-6, allowing fourteen goals while only scoring twice during that time period.

Friday, In what would prove to be the closest match of the week, the Lady Cards battled Cortland fiercely. For 20 minutes the momentum shifted back and forth. Cortland struck first when Molly Adams ’07 was called for interference on a questionable call, and the resulting goal put Cortland up one to nothing, but in the early stages of the third period, captain Meghan Frederico ’05 broke through the tough Cortland defense and scored on a beautiful shot that whipped past the opposing goalie’s stick. Undaunted, Cortland immediately moved to take advantage of Wesleyan’s lack of discipline following the goal, scoring the winning goal 40 seconds later as the Cardinals suffered another bitter defeat, this time by a score of 2-1.

The Lady Cards had another disappointing outcome against Utica on Saturday as the team was shut out in its second to last match of the fall season. Careless penalties again played a key role as Utica scored on two successive power plays in the first period en route to a 3-0 defeat of the Cardinals.

Despite the losses, all three captains are confident that the team will turn things around Friday at 7 p.m., when they host Salve Regina.

The men’s ice hockey team travels to Hobart College on Friday for its last match of the fall season. After a slow start, the men are riding a two game winning streak after defeating conference foes UMASS-Boston (6-1) and Babson (3-1) last weekend.
