The baseball team completed a frustrating week of play with three losses in four games. The lone victory game featured the pitching of Tom Bloss ’05, who tamed the Middlebury bats and lead the Cardinals to a 6-2 win. The rest of the week consisted of close calls and missed opportunities as the men dropped both games of the Saturday doubleheader against Middlebury and then fell to Springfield College 13-9.

The weekend began with much promise with the staff ace Bloss dominating the Panther opposition. The Cardinal offense featured clutch hitting from Mac Clonan ’05 who handed the team a 4-2 lead when he delivered a bases-loaded double to the left field corner. This offense was more than enough for the lanky Bloss, who pitched his fourth complete game of the season.

In the first game of the doubleheader, Wes was able to match the Panther run for run through seven innings. In the first extra inning, the Middlebury second baseman hit a seeing-eye single up the box and just out of the reach of shortstop Angus Fredenberg ’04 to bring in the winning run in the Panther’s 5-4 victory. In the second game, Middlebury jumped all over starter Brian Mahr ’07. The Cardinals’ offense was able to scratch back and brought the tying run to the plate before succumbing 10-6.

The Monday afternoon game was full of offensive pyrotechnics including a moon shot home run off the bat of Alexander Brooks ’06. The round tripper gave the Cardinal men a temporary 7-4 lead. The Pride were able to manufacture runs with the help of some key Wes errors. The game was tied 9-9 going into the final frame when Springfield’s bats came alive and widened what was a tight ballgame into a 13-9 victory for the visitors.
