The women’s ice hockey team hosted Middlebury and Williams this past weekend, facing off against both NESCAC rivals for the second time this season. In the previous contests, the Cardinals were defeated 9-0 and 4-2 at Middlebury and Williams, respectively. Hoping to avenge the losses, Wesleyan hit the ice Friday night, but was unable to match the offensive fervor of seventh-ranked Middlebury, losing 6-0. Saturday did not yield better results, as Williams topped the Cardinals 4-1.
Keeper Ashleigh Corvi ’13 posted an impressive game to keep Wesleyan in the contest at the beginning of the match. In the first period, Corvi made 19 stops to keep the game close, as the Cardinals went into the locker room down 1-0. But Middlebury came out strong in the second period, firing 14 more shots to amass a 4-0 lead. Corvi added 11 saves in the second and 12 more in the third to finish the game with 41 saves. Wesleyan could not get the puck down to their end of the rink, ending the game with only five shots on goal. Middlebury was able to capitalize on two of six power plays in the game, while Wesleyan went scoreless on three opportunities. The Cardinals have not beaten the Panthers since their first meeting in 1978.
On Saturday, the team had a better day offensively, firing 19 shots against the Williams goaltender, but Wes remained scoreless until a goal by Kelsey Muller ’13 in the third period. The Ephs gradually built up their score, snagging a goal in the first, another in the second, and two more in the third to end the game with a 4-1 win. The Cardinals last beat Williams in the 2005-2006 season with a close 2-1 victory. Corvi posted another outstanding game, finishing the contest with 31 saves.
Next up for the Cardinals is neighboring NESCAC rival Trinity College. The team has a week to prepare before hitting the road this Saturday, Feb. 5.
