Wesleyan fell to Trinity 1-0 on Saturday in Hartford in a cold, drizzling rain. It was a heartbreaking loss for the Cardinals who put forth a solid effort on both sides of the ball, but failed to come away with a win in their second one goal loss of the season. The Bantams scored early in the game, and Wesleyan spent the rest of the game looking for the equalizer.
It was an event without team scoring, but the Wheaton Invitational at Wheaton College saw a select few Cardinal tennis players represent the team well as they returned to Middletown with three titles and a second place finish.
The men's soccer team is in unfamiliar territory after dropping their third straight one goal defeat of the season, this time to Trinity College by the score of 1-0. Despite out-shooting the Bantams 16-10 in the contest, the Cards were unable to finish any of their opportunities, and have started the season 0-3 for the first time since 1958, when the team finished 0-9-1.
Coming off a victory in the season-opening Trinity Invitational, senior golfer Dave Velardo continued to impress with a third place finish in the 128-man field at the Duke Invitational. Velardo fired two rounds of 73 for a four-over par total of 146, good enough to break the Wesleyan scoring record at the event. Chris Dejoh of Skidmore and Travis Dewire of Babson finished in a tie for first, just one stroke ahead of Velardo at three-over par 145.
Left with a number of unclaimed items that were confiscated over the course of last year's controversial student dorm sweeps, the University Office of Fire Safety held an internal "confiscated items free give-a-way" to all Physical Plant employees last Wednesday.
The Wesleyan Student Assembly (WSA) kicked off its first meeting of the year Sunday evening with a flurry of public interest, generated by ongoing student concerns about the plight of the Univeristy's food service workers.
Two assaults against Univeristy students last Saturday morning have led to increased action by both Public Safety and the Middletown Police Department. The incidents have highlighted the sometimes delicate relationship between students and Middletown residents.
As the first hand-painted banners finally hang from the new University Center, uncertainties about working conditions are starting to boil over. The first Wesleyan Student Assembly (WSA) general assembly of the academic year addressed these issues on Sunday, hosting union workers from Campus Dining and bringing to the forefront many of the problems that have been floating around campus since Usdan first opened its doors several weeks ago.
Elyssa Pachico's Sept. 14 article "Privileging the Privileged" highlighted the sticky web of issues that students from low-income areas face when applying to colleges. Toni Martello's quoted comment that her "guidance counselors weren't pushing college" particularly struck me as a sad and all too true commentary on an overloaded system. On average, the student-to-guidance-counselor ratio at a public high school in a low-income area is an astounding 740:1.
Supporters of iconoclastic Texas Congressman Ron Paul were out in full force this Sunday morning, as they visited the University in an attempt to register students to vote for Paul in the upcoming Republican primary. Six Paul supporters, twice the expected turnout according to organizer Bryan Tracy, pressed on even though the campus was sleepy and the students mostly unenthusiastic.
"So, where do you go to college?" "Wesleyan University." "Oh, sure. Ohio Wesleyan?"
Since the advent of the cell phone era, college students everywhere just can't seem to hang up—between classes, in classes, and at parties, students are glued to their cell phones. The launch of Apple's iPhone on June 29, 2007 (for the pricey sum of $599) has only increased student attachment to phones.
Grilled Cheese ’11 I've been talking to a lot of people around this campus, and one thing gets brought up repeatedly: our representatives in student government are not delicious enough. Recently, the WSA has been described as "bland," "flavorless" and "supremely uninteresting." Well, I'm here to change all that. Grilled cheese brings a proven leader, both in administration as well as great taste. Who among us does not enjoy two slices of delicious cheddar cheese, encased by two crunchy slices of butter drenched bread?
The women's volleyball team opened NESCAC play this weekend by tyrannizing all three of their NESCAC opponents. The Cards did not give up a game on the way to 3-0 sweeps of both Bates and Colby. Wesleyan went on to roll Bowdoin 3-1 for their 17th consecutive win against the squad.
