In his commencement address, Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) directly challenged the class of 2008 to commit themselves to community involvement and global engagement. Obama filled in for Senator Edward Kennedy (D-MA), whose recent diagnosis with a malignant brain tumor prevented him from speaking at the event.
When Lloyd Komesar ’74 learned that Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) would be this year’s commencement speaker, the California-native knew what he had to do. “This is one of those historical moments at Wesleyan, so I jumped on a plane,” Komesar said.
While The Argus does not usually print a commencement issue, we felt it to be necessary this year given Senator Barack Obama's appearance as commencement speaker. Amidst the national and local media coverage of the ceremony, we hope to reflect student perspectives on the day's events.
